In the latest episode of Off Topic, But On Point, we went deep – not by design, but because that’s what happens when truth meets trust. This week’s conversation, led by the ever-insightful Pastor Christo Pretorius, turned into a heartfelt reflection on identity, influence, and what it really means to become.
Joined by Odette de Beer, Dr. Janine de Cabo (aka The Intentionalist), and her brilliant friend and co-host Pastor Christo, we explored the beautiful tension between growth and grounding. Here's a glimpse of what went down—and why it matters.
Why This Podcast Is Different
Unlike our individual shows, this space is sacred. It's real friends having real conversations—raw, unscripted, and rich with shared experience. Here, there's no need to perform or posture. It's about showing up, saying the truth, and listening deeply.
As Odette put it, “This is my favourite conversation. It challenges me. Sometimes I hold back tears. But I always leave better.”
The Becoming: What Shapes Us
This episode was titled The Becoming of Odette de Beer & Dr. Janine de Cabo—and for good reason. Pastor C asked questions that opened doors into our formative moments: from career-defining promotions to life-altering moves across the world.
For me, my parents’ contrasting influences—my mom’s corporate precision and my dad’s entrepreneurial fire—shaped my leadership style and grounded my approach to business. A pivotal moment? Being promoted to Marketing Manager early in my career, and my mom's less-than-thrilled reaction. At the time, I didn’t get it. Now, I do. She saw the weight that title would bring. And she was right. - Dr. Janine Do Cabo
Odette’s story echoed a similar theme. From watching her dad pursue academic excellence to her mom’s quiet strength and resilience, her roots run deep. One defining moment came at 21, confidently declaring over dinner in Kenya, “I’m destined for greatness.” That conviction never left—despite the challenges of rebuilding a life (and business) from scratch after relocating internationally. - Odette de Beer
What We Leave Behind
Odette shared the heartbreak of leaving behind sentimental things—like her kids’ handprints in clay or her wedding album—but reminded us that the real essentials aren’t tangible. Knowledge. Grit. Relationships. Those travel with you.
The hardest part of the transition? Letting go of identity. “In South Africa, I worked hard for my reputation. Here, I was a nobody.” That vulnerability gave birth to new strength. She started a women’s networking group that’s already changing lives. One woman came up after an event and said, “Your words made me feel like I belonged. I relaunched my business today because of that.”
That's impact.
From Overwhelm to Intention
As we shared our struggles, a common theme emerged: the tension between where we are and where we want to be. Whether it’s yearning for greater influence or feeling the weight of time, we’re all navigating the gap.
For me, that meant simplifying. Out of overwhelm, intentionality was born. I asked myself: What 10 things can I focus on to grow? I named them. I lived them. And I shared them. That framework became the heart of what I now teach.
Odette’s challenge? Slowing down. “I do everything on double-time—sermons, podcasts, voice notes. But growth isn’t a sprint. I need to slow down so others can come with me.”
The Wisdom We’re Living By
Before we wrapped, Pastor C asked: What advice would you give to someone in their own becoming?
Here’s what we said:
Simplify the process. Build a system that works for you. Make it so easy you’ll stick with it.
Start from experience. You’re not beginning from scratch—you’re building on everything you’ve lived and learned.
You can’t derail your destiny. You’re not powerful enough to mess up God’s plan for your life.
Don’t despise small beginnings. True transformation often starts with one person. You.
This episode was full of laughter, tears, and truths that go straight to the soul. If you’re in the middle of becoming—personally, professionally, or spiritually—this conversation is for you.
🎧 Listen now, and then share it with a friend who needs to be reminded: You’re not alone in the process. And yes, you are becoming someone remarkable.
